Keeping the change. Keep the reason.

A custody method for preserving raw sources, transformations and scientific corrections across a versioned evidence collection.

Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.

A decision needs a recoverable version

Preserve the source and parser version behind a decision so that a later correction can be traced to its affected outputs.

A scientific comparison may change when a source table is corrected, a parser is improved or a missing condition is resolved. The proposed custody record preserves the version used for each decision so the earlier result remains understandable. It separates raw acquisition, extracted observations, transformations and presentation. A buyer should be able to identify what changed and why rather than receiving a silently updated graph. This is useful both for a public analysis and for a commissioned evidence brief: the team can reproduce the original reasoning, inspect a correction and decide whether the development conclusion needs revision.

A file digest answers a narrow integrity question

Use file digests to detect changed bytes while keeping their narrow integrity role separate from source authenticity or scientific correctness.

The acquired rheology files retain repository checksums and independently calculated SHA-256 digests. NIST’s Secure Hash Standard describes algorithms for producing message digests used to detect changed bytes (NIST, 2015). A matching digest can support the custody of a particular file; it does not establish authorship, licence or scientific truth. The proposed manifest would therefore retain the source URL, repository version and rights record separately. A buyer inspecting the export could see which source bytes supported the calculation and which transformation version was applied, without mistaking a cryptographic check for validation of the experiment itself.

The deposited version remains explicit

Retain the deposited version when reproducing a rheology observation, with later source updates treated as distinct evidence states rather than silent replacements.

Woodbridge et al. (2025) provide a versioned Figshare record with file-specific metadata. The bounded acquisition stores that metadata and the original CSVs before deriving apparent viscosity or loss factor. A later source version would require a new review and a change note, not replacement of the old raw files. The proposed record would identify added, removed and changed observations as well as altered method text or rights. The current rows remain external specimen measurements. A revised export should preserve that attribution and distinguish a source correction from a Bio parsing or calculation correction.

Extraction and interpretation can change separately

Separate extraction corrections from interpretation changes so that a revised comparison explains exactly which scientific quantity or assumption was affected.

A header correction may alter units without changing the source bytes. A revised interpretation may change which comparison is permitted without changing any numerical value. The proposed release record would classify those changes separately and record their consequences. A reader could then determine whether a prior result is numerically affected, scientifically narrowed or simply more clearly documented. The method would also preserve unresolved discrepancies instead of resolving them through presentation. That distinction matters to a buyer who has used a comparison in a development meeting: it identifies what needs reconsideration and prevents a harmless wording change from being confused with a new experiment.

Provenance should travel with the export

Include provenance and transformation history in an export, allowing another team to reconstruct the path from source record to reported result.

FAIR principles include qualified references and provenance alongside scientific metadata (Wilkinson et al., 2016). The proposed passport would therefore carry source version, location, licence, raw-file identifiers and transformation version into the downloaded record. A spreadsheet or API response should not depend on the user remembering a separate website page. The export would also state whether a value is observed, published summary, locally reproduced or modelled. These distinctions let another scientist trace the evidence chain and judge whether the record can be reused for a new question without making the original source or calculation appear more authoritative than it is.

(Wilkinson et al, 2016)

Corrections need a proportionate response

Trace a correction through dependent outputs before deciding whether it requires a revised calculation, a notice or another experimental check.

A correction process should identify which outputs depend on the changed record and whether the buyer’s decision could be affected. The proposed system would retain a dependency map between raw inputs, derived values, plots and passports. It would not claim that every historical user can be notified without an agreed service and contact process. Public corrections could be documented in a visible version note; a commissioned delivery would define its correction responsibilities in scope. This makes curation credible while keeping operational commitments realistic. A historical dataset does not refresh itself, and a checked date should not imply continuous monitoring or automated scientific review.

A reproducibility acceptance task

Use representative source-to-output reproductions as an acceptance task, checking that the custody record survives independent inspection by a receiving scientist.

The proposed deliverable would include a manifest, representative extraction checks and a source-to-output reproduction task. Another scientist should be able to reconstruct selected values and identify the exact source version without access to private assumptions. A partner considering recurring evidence access could use that task to assess whether the service is reliable enough for its workflow. Practical review capacity, retention and correction commitments would need agreement before commercial delivery. The value is an evidence chain that can survive challenge and change, rather than an assurance that a dataset is permanently error-free because it passed one initial technical check.

Release a new version only for a stated change

Release a revised record for a stated source or processing change, preserving the earlier version that supported the original decision.

The next commitment should test the custody process on a deliberate parsing correction or a recoverable source-version difference. The team can then inspect whether the affected observations, calculations and exports are identified correctly. If that task fails, expanding the collection would multiply the problem. If it succeeds, new records can enter through the same finite review process with explicit versioning. A buyer should be able to answer what changed, which decision it could affect and how the earlier version remains reproducible. That makes source custody a useful scientific and commercial capability rather than an invisible implementation detail.

What a useful comparison
would record.

  1. Define the record needed for “A decision needs a recoverable version” and identify what is currently missing.
  2. Check the evidence behind “A file digest answers a narrow integrity question” against the proposed buyer decision.
  3. Retain the applicable source links, versions, method limits and the exact evidence needed before another commitment.

What the proposed

  • A source/transformation manifest and a correction-aware release record
  • A preparation, comparator and endpoint record tied to this question.
  • A source-linked account of the evidence gaps, study assumptions and next review point.
