Unknown is a useful state.
A data model for distinguishing unreported, unmeasured, inapplicable and unavailable information without turning gaps into false matches.
Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.
A blank cell can mean several things
Distinguish unreported, unmeasured and inapplicable fields before using blank cells to describe the evidence available for a comparison.
A source may omit a condition, state that an endpoint was not measured, or describe a field that does not apply to that experiment. Access restrictions can also prevent inspection of an otherwise relevant record. Those situations need different responses. The proposed schema would retain the missingness state and its reason rather than storing one empty string or a numerical zero. A development team can then distinguish a source-recovery task from a new experiment and identify which absence actually blocks its decision. Making the distinction visible is useful evidence engineering, not an admission that the dataset has failed.

Missing information is not a matching condition
Inspect how the working atlas preserves missing conditions, preventing two absent entries from becoming a misleading statement of agreement.
The working Material Evidence Atlas already treats two absent values as unreported rather than matched. An expanded collection would preserve that rule across preparation, concentration and endpoint fields. Sun et al. (2015) provide a useful example where retention-condition wording needs resolution; the record can retain the observation without claiming an exact reproduction protocol. A buyer should therefore see the gap in context and decide whether it matters to the application. The comparison should not reward missing detail by declaring experiments equivalent, and a visually clean matrix should not conceal the uncertainty carrying that judgement.
Coverage is descriptive, not a quality score
Define eligible records before reporting coverage, keeping completeness separate from scientific validity or an invented numerical quality score.
A collection can report how many applicable records contain a particular field, provided the denominator and eligibility rules are stated. That measure describes documentation coverage; it does not estimate validity, efficacy or the probability of a successful development programme. FAIR principles support rich metadata and provenance, but do not remove the need for scientific judgement (Wilkinson et al., 2016). The proposed field view would show coverage alongside the specific missing records. A user could then prioritise a condition needed for its decision rather than comparing datasets using an arbitrary overall completeness grade that disguises which absence is consequential.

Keep the conditions attached to the result.
Make scientific records useful through source-linked comparisons, explicit units and a reproducible decision trail.
Preserve the reason a record was excluded
Retain the reason behind each exclusion so that a reader can assess how source availability and compatibility shape the evidence collection.
A source can be excluded because its endpoint is incompatible, its units cannot be resolved or its rights do not permit the intended reuse. Those reasons should not be combined into a generic low-quality label. NLM’s repository guidance makes article-specific rights and access routes relevant to automated retrieval (NLM, 2026). The proposed exception log would retain source identity and the decision reason while avoiding redistribution of material without the necessary rights. A future correction or authorised access route could then change the collection transparently. The record’s previous absence would remain understandable rather than disappearing from the scientific history.
Do not impute what the application needs observed
Identify which missing quantities require observation or source recovery before statistical handling creates a plausible but scientifically unsupported record.
A missing measurement can sometimes be handled statistically, but a critical preparation or assay condition may need source recovery or direct observation. The proposed collection would distinguish modelled estimates from measured fields and require explicit justification before using an imputation in a decision. If a formulator needs final concentration to reproduce an assay, guessing a plausible value may produce a polished but unusable brief. The team should instead identify the smallest missing input and whether obtaining it would change the comparison. This keeps data completion from becoming an invisible source of scientific claims the underlying records cannot support.
Reporting standards provide specific questions
Use domain-specific reporting guidance to ask precise questions about an assay, rather than treating a generic checklist as universal qualification.
STRENDA identifies catalyst and assay fields that make enzyme data more reusable (STRENDA Commission, 2021). The proposed missingness map would use such domain-specific requirements rather than applying the same checklist to every dataset. A film record may need thickness and environmental history; a kinetic record may need catalyst concentration and fit model. A source with fewer fields may still answer a narrow decision, while a richly documented source may address the wrong endpoint. The reader should therefore see how each required field relates to the intended experiment, making coverage useful for scoping rather than a decorative dashboard metric.
A targeted evidence-recovery brief
Target evidence recovery at decision-critical gaps, naming the source or measurement that could resolve each uncertainty and its practical consequence.
The proposed deliverable would identify decision-critical gaps, the source or measurement capable of resolving each one and the consequences if it remains unresolved. It could separate a small authorised retrieval task from a larger study requirement. A partner could inspect that prioritisation before commissioning further curation or analysis, with source rights and delivery scope agreed. The commercial value is a clearer path through uncertainty: the team knows whether to obtain a method, change the endpoint or stop the comparison. It is not a promise to recover every missing record or a claim that unknown values have been scientifically filled.
The next proposed comparison.
A field-state map and a targeted recovery or measurement plan
Resolve the gap that can change the plan
Prioritise the absent information most likely to alter the plan, avoiding collection completeness that adds work without changing the scientific choice.
The next step should not pursue completeness for its own sake. If a missing field cannot affect the current decision, it may remain a visible limitation while the team proceeds with a narrower scope. If it determines whether two experiments are comparable, resolving it deserves priority. The proposed record would explain that distinction and preserve the chosen boundary. A buyer should leave with a finite recovery or measurement task, an acceptance criterion and a fallback if the evidence remains unavailable. This turns missingness into an actionable scientific decision instead of hiding it behind confidence or expanding the source collection indiscriminately.
