The path through the sample. Before following the result.

A preparation-centred evidence method for deciding whether a published material is comparable to the material a development team can obtain.

Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.

The name is only the beginning

Trace organism, recovery and material distribution before deciding whether two preparations belong in the same ingredient comparison.

An ingredient family can hide important differences in organism, recovery method, residual components and molecular distribution. A buyer considering a published result needs to establish which material reached the instrument before interpreting what the result means. This proposed record starts with a sample identity and follows its processing history. It separates a named organism, a recovered preparation and a purified analytical fraction rather than treating them as synonyms. That distinction matters when a supplier can offer a crude powder while the attractive structural result belongs to a selected chromatographic fraction that may not be commercially reproducible.

Recovery changes the comparison

Distinguish a characterised purified fraction from the crude material used in functional assays before carrying results between them.

Sun et al. (2015) describe recovery and protein-removal steps before further purification for structural characterisation. Their functional crude-EPS experiments cannot silently inherit all the purified preparation’s analytical attributes. The proposed provenance graph would place those branches beside one another and attach each observation to the branch actually tested. It would record the method’s source location and preserve uncertainty about yields or residuals rather than extrapolating them. A development team could use this graph to decide whether to procure the material, ask for further characterisation or commission a comparison using a preparation it could realistically reproduce.

From a film to a prepared specimen

Reconstruct deposition and conditioning history so that a film comparison refers to the specimen actually tested, rather than its ingredient name.

A deposited film introduces its own identity: polymer grade, solvent history, deposition, drying and thickness all help define the specimen. Borrmann et al. (2022) provide a film-based example where the material state matters to water uptake and its interpretation. The proposed graph would therefore treat the film as a child specimen of its starting material, not as the same object in another photograph. If the application requires a coated surface, the buyer needs the coating preparation and measured thickness. Bulk-material evidence may guide a hypothesis, but it does not supply an observed film response without that preparation bridge.

The source specimen remains specific

Retain the identity of each deposited rheology specimen when interpreting its curves or planning a comparison with customer materials.

The new Woodbridge et al. (2025) dataset identifies a prepared Carbopol microgel and a commercial body-lotion specimen. Their measurements remain tied to those specimens and the stated instrument conditions. A brand label is useful source context; it is not permission to characterise every current product under that name. The proposed passport would preserve the deposited specimen description while making missing batch, age and handling details visible. This protects the scientific comparison and gives a partner precise questions to ask before using an external rheology curve as an acceptance range for its own material.

(Woodbridge et al, 2025)

Edges describe custody and transformation

Use provenance connections to describe documented preparation steps, allowing readers to follow custody without implying untested compatibility.

A provenance graph should use edges whose meanings can be stated: recovered from, purified into, deposited as, tested by and reported in. An edge should never mean that two connected ingredients are compatible or share efficacy. Each transformation could retain input and output identifiers, a source method, known conditions and the observed measurement. The graph can also contain unresolved branches, including an unknown relation between preparations. Keeping that uncertainty explicit is useful when an attractive scientific narrative otherwise encourages a buyer to treat a chemically similar material as the exact sample behind a published result.

Which identity measurements are decision-critical?

Choose the identity measurements needed for the application decision, separating indispensable information from an indiscriminate analytical wish list.

The proposed incoming-material question depends on the application. A deposition study may need solids basis, molecular-size distribution and residual salt information. A rheology comparison may need concentration, neutralisation and rest history. An enzyme record needs catalyst identity, modifications and purity criteria, fields highlighted by STRENDA (STRENDA Commission, 2021). These requirements should be selected because they explain the intended endpoint, rather than assembled into an indiscriminate checklist. The reader could mark a field as necessary for the current decision, optional context or unreported, then use that record to scope a proportionate characterisation step.

(STRENDA Commission, 2021)

A practical supplier discussion

Turn preparation gaps into answerable supplier questions about lots, recovery, concentration and the properties required for qualification.

The proposed deliverable would translate the preparation graph into questions a supplier or research partner can answer. It would ask which production step produces the available grade, which analytical attributes are specified and which vary by lot. It would distinguish a certificate’s measured values from broad descriptive claims. A partner could then compare a feasible candidate preparation with the study preparation under a common endpoint. The scientific service hypothesis is a defined identity and comparison brief; any additional assays, sample handling or confidential composition would require a separately agreed scope, rights and practical delivery route.

The bridge that can change the decision

Locate the missing preparation bridge most likely to change material selection, then decide whether source recovery or measurement can resolve it.

The next step should establish the smallest missing identity bridge that matters. If composition is already adequate but film thickness is unknown, repeating a broad chemical profile may add little. If the available grade differs fundamentally from the tested fraction, a direct performance comparison may be more informative than a long similarity argument. The proposed record would state the uncertainty, the measurement that could resolve it and the outcome that would justify proceeding. This makes provenance commercially useful: it can prevent a poorly defined study or make a justified comparison easier to commission and interpret.
