From the founder

Founder perspective on the company direction. Research plans and external references are identified separately.

01

The company I want to build.

I am building VARUNÉ Bio to bring biological curiosity into the decisions that make a material worth developing.

Biology offers remarkable functions. A development team needs to know what can be reproduced, formulated and used. I want Bio to work at that meeting point, with enough imagination to see an opportunity and enough discipline to find out whether it holds.

That is what connects our research direction with my ambition for the company: create knowledge and material approaches that can become useful assets, then build the organisation to develop them.

02

Two programmes give the ambition a direction.

Polar-associated materials and biochemical light are the programmes I have chosen to build around.

The polar programme starts with a skin-formulation application and the behaviour of a deposited film. The light programme asks how a reaction could become a useful function within a material.

They bring different scientific demands and commercial possibilities. Formulation science connects the approach, while each programme keeps its own development decision.

Compare the questions
01

Polar-associated biological materials

The question
Can a chemically defined preparation provide a useful formulation advantage?
What would make the work worth advancing?
An interpretable comparison that survives the constraints of the intended application.
02

Biochemical light

The question
Can a specified reaction deliver useful light when incorporated into a material?
What would make the work worth advancing?
An application in which measured output, operation and handling justify the material approach.
03

Formulation is the connection I care about.

I want us to understand what happens when a biological component enters a real material environment.

For a topical film, that means the preparation, the mixture and the layer after application. For biochemical light, it means the catalyst, its surroundings and the access needed to produce useful output.

The interesting work sits in those relationships. A good research brief should help us learn which of them a developer can put to use.

04

Why I am starting with skin formulation.

Skin gives the polar programme a clear first development context.

A formulation team has to consider spreading, compatibility, the layer a product leaves and the performance it is intended to deliver. I want those practical demands to shape the research early.

That also creates a focused commercial conversation with ingredient, formulation and beauty-group R&D teams. The next step is a specific problem and the comparison that would help them assess a better approach.

05

Make the material knowledge useful.

The polar-polymer literature gives us a lead. Our job is to sharpen the connection between preparation and function.

I want the programme to establish which fraction is under investigation, what travels with it and what changes when it enters an ambient film. That is how a promising result can become a development brief another scientist can challenge.

A useful output might be a specification, a comparative package or a formulation insight. It should be clear enough for a developer to decide what to do next.

06

Give biochemical light room to find its purpose.

The visual appeal brought us to the field. A specific materials task will give the programme its direction.

I want us to investigate the architecture around a defined reaction: where the active components remain, what reaches them and how the output fits a use. Existing systems such as NanoLuc belong to the external landscape we can learn from.

The first intended application is an inert surface or research tool. Its place in the portfolio should be earned by the output, handling and development case.

The development brief

Light needs a useful role.

The spectacle opens the question. A defined task and a demanding comparison give it a reason to develop.

07

Keep a bigger horizon and a focused company.

Ageing and rejuvenation remain part of my longer-term scientific interest. The current portfolio has two programmes.

I want room to examine ambitious ideas in the Journal and to develop a thesis as our understanding grows. An operating programme needs a sharper commitment: a question, relevant expertise, resources and a route to useful evidence.

That threshold protects the work we choose to pursue. It gives a larger vision a practical way to develop.

08

Build the organisation around the work.

The people, methods and interpretation need to connect around a defined research package.

Internal and external recruitment and research arrangements are part of Bio’s development. Some identities remain confidential, while the public programme can still explain its purpose and intended outputs.

I want responsibilities to be clear, contributions accurately recorded and technical challenge welcomed. Those are the foundations of the company I am trying to build.

09

Create value that can carry into the next project.

The company ambition is to turn useful R&D into knowledge and assets that can keep developing.

A scoped co-development project could be the first commercial step when its capability, access, rights and costs are established. The wider opportunity is the permitted method, specification or data that remains useful beyond that individual piece of work.

Supply and licensing are possible later routes. I want the evidence for the asset to guide the business model and the next commitment.

10

Choose a benchmark that makes us better.

I want the research to face the alternative a serious developer would otherwise use.

That comparison can reveal a useful contribution, a narrower opportunity or a better direction. Before the work begins, the team should understand what a favourable, unfavourable or inconclusive result would mean.

A rigorous comparison helps us spend the next pound and the next month with a clearer reason.

Compare the questions
01

Polar-associated materials

A comparison that matters
A defined candidate alongside an appropriate established material, with the role of loading, rheology and other constituents examined.
The decision it should inform
Whether there is a useful, interpretable contribution worth translating further.
02

Biochemical light

A comparison that matters
A specified material system alongside the relevant solution and material references under the intended operating conditions.
The decision it should inform
Whether the material approach earns its added complexity for a defined use.
11

My responsibility is to make the direction clear.

I lead the priorities, company thesis and connection between the research and its development path.

That means finding the relevant expertise, protecting focus and connecting scientific decisions with the resources they require. It also means making room for conclusions that improve the plan, even when they change an initial idea.

I want this website and Journal to make Bio easier to understand, investigate and contribute to. The work should have a public narrative that is as clear as the ambition behind it.

12

The conversations I want to earn.

Bring a demanding formulation problem, a useful scientific capability or a serious question about the company’s next step.

For R&D teams and scientists, I want a discussion that can become a defined brief. For investors, I want to connect the next scientific milestone with the asset and business it could help establish.

VARUNÉ Bio’s ambition is substantial. I am giving it a focused starting point: two programmes, a formulation approach and a commitment to develop the work that proves worth taking further.
