Accessible data. Explicit rights.

A source-rights method for deciding which observations can support a public data product or commissioned commercial evidence collection.

Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.

Read access and reuse answer different questions

Separate permission to read a source from permission to redistribute observations or implement the science in a commercial offering.

A paper or API can be easy to access while its redistribution or commercial use remains restricted. The proposed rights ledger records what material is being used, where it comes from and which permission supports the intended action. A public data product, an internal reading brief and a redistributed numerical export may have different requirements. The buyer needs a finite inclusion decision for its deliverable, not a vague assumption that online availability means unrestricted ownership. The method would preserve the source-specific licence and identify unresolved cases before data are copied into a customer workflow or a public interface.

Permissive reuse still carries obligations

Check attribution and change-notice obligations before reusing permissively licensed material, preserving the rights attached to the actual source record.

Creative Commons’ official CC BY 4.0 documentation permits commercial sharing and adaptation subject to its terms, including attribution and indication of changes (Creative Commons, n.d.). The proposed record would carry those requirements into the exported dataset, retaining author, source, licence and transformation history. It would not present the original authors as endorsing Bio or the buyer. Open numerical observations also would not become exclusively owned because the interface is proprietary. A scoped service could charge for curation and analysis while preserving the freedoms attached to the underlying source material. Applicable legal code and other relevant rights would still need checking for the intended use.

The new rheology acquisition has a recorded licence

Follow the recorded Figshare licence and version into an attributed rheology export, with specimen context and separate manufacturing rights explicit.

The official Figshare metadata for Woodbridge et al. (2025) identifies CC BY 4.0 for the deposited dataset. The bounded acquisition retains that metadata, version, repository checksums and original files. Those records provide a concrete basis for attributed numerical reuse in the public workbench and its downloadable attributed exports. The source specimen names remain descriptive scientific context, not a brand endorsement or a statement that Bio supplies those materials. The dataset’s permission to reuse observations does not establish a current product specification, confidential formulation access or rights to manufacture a proprietary composition.

Provider terms can change the acquisition plan

Inspect current provider terms before planning acquisition, because accessible records can carry redistribution conditions or obligations beyond their scientific fields.

BRENDA’s current official licence page identifies CC BY 4.0 for its online data and includes additional notices, including potential DSI obligations (BRENDA, n.d.). A provider-specific record therefore matters more than an old assumption about a database category. The proposed process would check the current terms and record what was actually acquired rather than treating a free endpoint as blanket permission. No BRENDA dataset is included in this collection. If another provider’s licence is unavailable or unsuitable, the dataset should remain outside the commercial/public pipeline until the required rights are established through an authorised route.

(BRENDA, n.d.)

Article rights can differ from figure or implementation rights

Review figure credits and implementation rights separately from article access, retaining restrictions that a general publication licence cannot resolve.

An open publication may contain third-party material with its own credit line or describe a construct, compound or method subject to separate rights. NLM’s copyright guidance emphasises article-specific terms and potential exclusions (NLM, 2026). The proposed ledger would therefore distinguish text/data reuse from images, software and implementation. A scientific discussion can cite a patented candidate without claiming a commercial licence to use it. If the development proposition depends on manufacture or exclusive access, that requires a separate rights assessment and agreement. The evidence-engineering record should expose that dependency instead of allowing an open article to imply an available commercial asset.

(NLM, 2026)

An API adds a redistribution context

Design a proposed API response to carry provenance and reuse terms alongside observations, allowing the receiving workflow to preserve attribution.

A proposed API should return source rights and version information alongside the scientific fields. It should also distinguish a direct source observation from a transformed or modelled result. The inclusion rules would reflect the API’s intended users and permitted reuse, with source restrictions retained rather than removed by packaging. A customer might pay for reliable curation and integration without acquiring exclusive rights to public facts. That proposition should be stated accurately in the commercial discussion. The interface or code licence cannot silently override the licence of an underlying record, and access controls should not be used to misrepresent the permitted reuse of open material.

A rights-aware deliverable specification

Specify included licences, transformations and unresolved rights in the deliverable so that a buyer knows which uses remain outside its scope.

The proposed output would identify included records, licences, attribution text, transformation notices and excluded or unresolved sources. A partner could inspect a sample export and understand what it can use for its stated purpose. Further legal or contractual review would be proportionate to the actual action, especially where manufacture, confidential data or restricted provider access is involved. The service hypothesis is a qualified evidence collection with clear source custody, not a guarantee of every legal permission needed for a finished product. Scope and responsibilities would be agreed before delivery, keeping scientific analysis and asset implementation rights distinct.

A source-specific rights ledger and an inclusion decision

Buy access only when it changes the decision

Consider paid access only where a decision-critical source and permitted use justify the expense against an adequate open alternative.

A paid source may be worth considering when it contains decision-critical evidence unavailable through an adequate permissive alternative. The proposed assessment would identify the missing record, permitted use, expected analytical value and total recurring or one-off cost before requesting a purchase. It would also compare narrower options such as a licensed extract or a scoped reading task. No access purchase is made by this programme page. The next commitment should secure evidence needed for a defined decision, with a defensible case for why the existing open sources and reviewed data cannot answer it sufficiently.

What a useful comparison
would record.

  1. Define the record needed for “Read access and reuse answer different questions” and identify what is currently missing.
  2. Check the evidence behind “Permissive reuse still carries obligations” against the proposed buyer decision.
  3. Retain the applicable source links, versions, method limits and the exact evidence needed before another commitment.

What the proposed

  • A source-specific rights ledger and an inclusion decision
  • A preparation, comparator and endpoint record tied to this question.
  • A source-linked account of the evidence gaps, study assumptions and next review point.
