Making the record useful elsewhere.
A proposed Bio API specification for returning source-linked scientific observations, conditions and comparison boundaries to an existing development workflow.
Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.
An API needs a repeated job
Start a potential API with a recurring scientific task that a receiving team can describe, test and evaluate against its current workflow.
A possible VARUNÉ Bio API should begin with a workflow a research team performs repeatedly. That might be retrieving condition-defined rheology observations, assembling preparation evidence or exporting assay parameters with their source model. A general endpoint that returns many papers does not establish useful integration. The proposed specification starts with the decision, the fields needed by the receiving system and the handling of uncertainty and missingness. An API would be justified only if that record helps a team perform a recurring task more reliably than its current literature, supplier or internal-data process, with demand and delivery effort tested before commercial availability is promised.

The observation is only one part of the response
Carry specimen identity, units and uncertainty alongside the observation so that an API response remains scientifically interpretable outside the website.
A numerical response would carry source and specimen identifiers, endpoint, original units, conditions, uncertainty basis and transformation history. FAIR principles support explicit identifiers, provenance and reuse metadata (Wilkinson et al., 2016). The proposed API would preserve those alongside values rather than returning a number whose scientific context depends on a separate marketing page. Missing fields would have defined states, and a client could request source-exact or explicitly transformed records. This makes the response useful for an internal comparison while preventing a receiving system from assuming that a normalised field is an original measurement or that a complete response has been experimentally validated.
Learn from an established exchange approach
Examine established enzymatic-data exchange principles before proposing a new record format, preserving their abstract-level evidence and implementation limits.
The public abstract of Lauterbach et al. (2023) describes EnzymeML as carrying conditions, time courses, parameters and models between tools. That is relevant evidence that scientific exchange needs more than a flat table. The subscription main text was not acquired, so this proposal makes no detailed claim about its demonstration scenarios. A Bio integration would first test whether an established format can represent the intended assay record before inventing another incompatible structure. The service proposition is a narrow, source-aware workflow for a buyer’s decision; it is not a claim that standardised enzymology exchange is a Bio invention.
Keep the conditions attached to the result.
Make scientific records useful through source-linked comparisons, explicit units and a reproducible decision trail.
A query should preserve its eligibility rules
Retain eligibility rules and snapshot identity with each query so that another scientist can recover why particular records entered the response.
The proposed query contract would return records satisfying explicit scientific and reuse criteria, with the chosen snapshot version retained. Filtering by temperature or endpoint should not silently remove source limitations or turn an unreported condition into a match. A formal record-set definition can make those rules testable. It would describe which records belong in the response, not predict which material is best. The client should also receive an exclusion summary where useful, so a zero-result response can be distinguished from no evidence, incompatible conditions or unavailable rights. This makes the API’s behaviour inspectable and supports a meaningful acceptance task with the intended user.
Select records from a named version using explicit scientific and reuse predicates.

A bounded real dataset
Test the proposed exchange on a finite licensed rheology subset before expanding sources or promising a comprehensive scientific-data service.
The new Woodbridge et al. (2025) rheology acquisition is a practical prototype candidate because its source files, units and mode conditions are retained. A test client could request one specimen and mode, inspect a measured point and receive valid derived apparent viscosity only when the rate denominator is positive. The response would remain tied to the source specimen and within-sweep design. It would not return an invented yield stress, uncertainty interval or current product specification. A small integration task like this can reveal whether the API preserves enough context for the user’s actual development question before broader curation is funded.
Errors and unknowns need a scientific meaning
Give unsupported quantities and unresolved source fields explicit error states, preventing a technically valid response from concealing missing scientific information.
An invalid unit conversion, unsupported endpoint or unavailable source should return a clear state rather than a plausible empty value. The proposed contract would distinguish a missing observation from zero and a restricted source from an incompatible experiment. It would define stable identifiers, pagination and version selection while retaining the scientific eligibility rule. A client could then handle an unresolved comparison explicitly in its own workflow. This matters commercially because technical uptime alone is insufficient: a reliable connection delivering ambiguous scientific quantities can still create bad decisions, and the value of a curated service depends on those quantities remaining interpretable.
Test the proposition before recurring infrastructure
Prove that a sample export improves an agreed buyer task before committing to recurring integration, infrastructure or a subscription proposition.
The proposed commercial route begins with a sample export or a small local integration using an agreed buyer task. A research team should demonstrate that it needs the same curated fields repeatedly and can inspect the result against original sources. Only then would versioned access, refresh commitments and fees deserve detailed discussion. Source licences would remain attached and would not become exclusively owned through the API. Practical curation effort, review capacity and correction handling would determine whether the offer is sustainable. No subscription, customer, price or production API is established by this specification, and no automated data acquisition service is activated.
The next proposed comparison.
A versioned record/query contract and a buyer-tested integration prototype
One integration worth proving
Choose one receiving workflow and acceptance task that can demonstrate useful integration without claiming demand from the existence of a prototype.
The next useful commitment is a client task with a finite record set, an explicit output and a scientist who can judge whether it improves the workflow. It should include at least one difficult case involving units, missingness or source restrictions, rather than only easy numerical rows. If the exported record is sufficient, a narrow prototype may be worth developing. If the buyer mainly needs a one-off interpretation, a scoped brief may be the better service. The proposed API should therefore emerge from repeated decision value, with a clear acceptance test and a stop criterion before substantial infrastructure or paid access is considered.
