A result can be useful without being positive.
A decision method for distinguishing non-detection, imprecision, meaningful absence and a failed application requirement in material or assay research.
Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.
A negative result has to be defined
Name whether the result concerns detection, benchmark difference or application failure before giving a negative finding its practical meaning.
A material may produce no detectable assay response, show a small difference from a benchmark or fail the requirement needed for an application. Those outcomes have different meanings. The proposed decision record names the endpoint, measurement capability and practical boundary before interpreting the result. A buyer can then distinguish evidence against the proposed use from an experiment that was simply too imprecise to answer the question. Preserving that distinction makes research commercially useful: the team can stop an unsupported proposition, narrow the operating condition or improve the method without pretending that every result has demonstrated an attractive product advantage.

Explanatory geometry · no simulated or measured performance
Nonsignificance does not prove no meaningful effect
Distinguish weak evidence for a difference from evidence for practical equivalence, keeping the decision boundary and uncertainty visible.
Lakens (2017) explains the distinction between a nonsignificant test and support for effects lying within pre-specified equivalence bounds. The proposed material application would require its own practical boundary and an appropriate study design; this statistical precedent does not establish equivalence of any Bio preparation. A small estimated difference with a wide interval may leave important alternatives unresolved. The record would retain that uncertainty rather than label the candidate equal, ineffective or successful. The team needs to decide what magnitude would matter to its application and whether the available design can exclude differences of that size.
A practical boundary belongs before the result
Set acceptable effect bounds from the application before inspecting results, then choose an analysis appropriate to the actual experimental design.
A proposed equivalence comparison should define the lower and upper effect bounds using the application question, then choose an analysis whose assumptions and uncertainty basis fit the design. The interval criterion below illustrates the relationship used in a two-one-sided-test framework; it is not applied to the current public datasets. Repeated units, pairing and variance estimation still need appropriate handling. Lakens (2017) provides the method precedent. A buyer can inspect the proposed boundary and decide whether meeting it would justify substituting a material, retaining the current approach or declining further development.
An appropriate interval wholly inside pre-specified bounds can support the corresponding equivalence conclusion.

A non-detection requires a capable method
Check detection capability when activity is absent, allowing a reader to distinguish a qualified non-detection from an unresolved measurement limitation.
STRENDA recommends reporting detection capability when activity is not detected, rather than using an ambiguous absence statement (STRENDA Commission, 2021). The proposed assay record would retain blank controls, instrument conditions and the range that the method can resolve. A result below that range is not automatically a measured zero. If the application requires a response smaller than the method can distinguish, the next step may be a better assay rather than a new material. This gives a negative result a precise interpretation and prevents a commercial decision being based on a measurement incapable of answering the relevant question.

The defined comparison
Balanced random-intercept scenario with between-preparation SD 10 response AU and within-preparation SD 6 response AU. Preparations are independent; residual readings are independent with common variance. The naive estimate treats all BR readings as independent and ignores clustering. The 3D groups depict a design count, not measured sample values. No confidence interval, power or precision guarantee is calculated. Drift, pairing, operators, serial correlation and unequal group sizes need additional structure.
Inspect the calculated values

Uncertainty can identify an inconclusive result
Use uncertainty to identify an inconclusive comparison rather than converting an unresolved difference into a reassuring statement of no effect.
JCGM’s framework helps define the uncertainty in a measured or derived quantity (JCGM, 2008). A proposed decision record would compare that uncertainty with the practical boundary supplied by the application team. If the interval spans both useful and unsuitable effects, the study may be inconclusive even when the central estimate looks favourable. The correct next commitment depends on whether more independent preparations, better calibration or another endpoint could resolve that ambiguity. The record would not turn a wide uncertainty range into a negative finding, and it would not hide it to preserve an attractive development narrative.
A failed model can narrow the useful domain
Let a failed prediction test define a narrower useful domain, preserving the limit instead of discarding the entire model or overstating transfer.
A model that fails a relevant holdout condition may still describe a narrower observed domain. NIST’s modelling guidance makes residual structure and adequacy part of assessment rather than relying on one score (NIST/SEMATECH, n.d.). The proposed report would preserve the failure and state whether it changes the model, application or development scope. A buyer might support a constrained tool while declining a broad predictive proposition. That decision is more informative than removing the difficult observations. It also protects scientific value by distinguishing a failed generalisation from a source dataset that remains useful for a specific descriptive question.
An informative stop decision is a deliverable
Commission a stop decision with its hypothesis, endpoint and practical boundary, making an unfavourable result inspectable and commercially informative.
The proposed brief would record the hypothesis, practical boundary, measured endpoint, uncertainty and result that changes the plan. It could recommend continuing, narrowing or stopping a proposed comparison without treating the latter as a failed service. A partner would be paying for an interpretable scientific decision, subject to a defined scope and delivery capacity, rather than a promised positive conclusion. Negative findings and unresolved results would remain part of the export. Any further experiment would be justified by the remaining ambiguity and its application value, with no implication that the current record has established safety, efficacy or finished-product equivalence.
The next proposed comparison.
A pre-specified practical-boundary record and an informative stop/revision decision
The uncertainty worth resolving
Choose follow-up work according to why the decision remains open, whether the cause is precision, assay capability or an inappropriate comparator.
The next step should follow the reason the decision remains open. If the method cannot detect the relevant response, improve the measurement. If independent preparation coverage is inadequate, change the design. If the candidate clearly fails a practical requirement, redirecting resources may be the most valuable outcome. The proposed record would explain that logic and retain the boundary that made the decision meaningful. A team should leave with a scientific reason for its next move and a finite evidence requirement, rather than a vague instruction to collect more data until a desirable result appears.
