A refill changes the scientific question.
A proposed use-context brief for connecting dispensing, residual material and repeated handling to an interpretable formulation study.
Proposed programme | Study scope, qualified delivery and funding to be agreed.
The actual refill experience.
The refill sequence determines the development question.
A refill proposition combines a formula, a dispensing path and a sequence of user actions. Replacing a sealed pack with a reusable vessel changes the scientific question even when the ingredient list is identical. Bio’s proposed brief would describe what the intended user does, which surfaces contact product and what residual material may remain. The commercial decision is whether a particular package–formula combination deserves further development and which uncertainty should be investigated first. A compelling sustainability story does not by itself establish microbial performance. The next comparison should therefore be framed around a defined use sequence and an inspectable preparation.
Examine the development decision
A refill changes the scientific question.
Open the sequence to examine what a development decision needs.
Identify the exact preparation, its source, and the properties a second laboratory must be able to reproduce.
Explanatory geometry · no simulated or measured performance
Map contact and carry-over separately.
Bulk, nozzle and residue have distinct histories.
A useful record would distinguish bulk product, wetted dispensing surfaces, residual films and the material added at refill. Each can have a different history. The proposed study should state whether it evaluates an unopened formula, a simulated repeated-use preparation or a package component. Combining them into one composite can obscure where an observation originates. A visual journey could follow a product dose through those locations while revealing the relevant sampling basis. That would help formulation and packaging colleagues agree on the question before a laboratory decides how to recover organisms or characterise material from a difficult surface.
Treat a development scenario as a defined comparison.
Choose a plausible and reproducible use comparison.
The planned use sequence should be plausible for the product and stated in enough detail to reproduce. It might compare a new vessel with a justified residual-material scenario, or examine a specific dispensing revision against its incumbent. The project should not create extreme conditions solely to produce a dramatic result, nor should it omit an inconvenient but expected exposure. The sponsor would decide which outcome changes the next design choice. A qualified team would assess safety and appropriate methods. Bio’s proposed contribution is the preparation and comparator rationale, with the intended use and unresolved assumptions kept visible.
The formula changes the observation.
Investigate the relationship between formulation, phase availability, sample recovery and interpretable microbial evidence.
Keeping surface recovery on a known area basis.
Record the area represented by each observation.
The equation below expresses recovered colonies over the sampled surface area. It describes the measurement basis, not the true total burden in every recess. Surface recovery efficiency, swab coverage and material retention need their own suitability assessment. A count per area should not be combined with a bulk count per mass without an explicit question and compatible conversion. FDA’s method includes attention to container condition and representative sampling (Huang et al., 2024). A proposed packaging study would preserve location and recovery method alongside the value so that a reader can tell whether two observations describe the same part of the use journey.
Area-normalisation helps compare defined samples; it cannot compensate for unequal recovery.
- Recovered burden on specified sampled areaCFU cm⁻²
- Recovered colony-forming units with dilution correctionCFU
- Recorded sampled areacm²
Model conditions. Sampling area is known. Recovery efficiency and inaccessible regions need separate validation. Not equivalent to true total surface burden. Sampled area must be positive and documented.
Using attachment science as context, not a ready-made coating claim.
Surface identity needs its own preparation record.
Hook et al. (2012) studied bacterial attachment to selected polymer materials in a device-oriented setting. That work motivates attention to surface identity; it does not validate a refill package or give Bio rights to a coating. A candidate packaging comparison should record the component grade, surface finish, cleaning history and conditioning film. If the sponsor is considering a coating, access, durability and chemical compatibility become separate questions. The proposed brief would identify whether a simple surface comparison could inform the decision before a more elaborate biological test is commissioned. Any antimicrobial marketing claim would require its own evidence and classification review.
Keeping preservation and repeated use connected but distinct.
Development scenarios require a formal evaluation context.
ISO 11930’s public entry describes antimicrobial-protection evaluation, while a refill scenario introduces additional package and handling context (ISO, 2019). The laboratory should justify how any development comparison relates to the appropriate formal evaluation route. A favourable result from one staged refill sequence would remain bounded by that sequence and preparation. The evidence record should also capture unsuccessful recovery, package leakage, formula separation and other observations relevant to interpretation. The purpose is to make a next design choice more credible. It is not to label every refill safe or to infer an entire shelf-life claim from a short illustrative experience.
Deliver a brief the packaging supplier can quote against.
Give the package supplier a coherent measurement request.
The proposed output would contain the use map, package and formula identities, comparator rationale, sampling locations and a defined external study request. It could give a packaging partner an agreed question about residual material or a revised dispenser without revealing unnecessary proprietary composition. A later project might incorporate qualified microbiology, analytical chemistry and package testing, each with separate responsibilities. Commercial terms would follow the actual scope and delivery capacity. The initial value is practical coordination: the same record can connect the brand’s user journey with the laboratory’s sample preparation and the supplier’s design decision.
The next proposed comparison.
Package–formula exposure map and external study commissioning brief
One package decision into the discussion.
Start with one unresolved package choice.
An enquiry can start with the format, expected refill process, relevant component and decision that remains open. A drawing or non-confidential use sequence may be enough to establish the first scope. The next milestone would be a sponsor-reviewed development scenario and a qualified quotation for the measurements it needs. If the scenario reveals that cleaning feasibility or material compatibility is the dominant issue, the programme should redirect accordingly. Bio would pursue a refill-related commercial stream only where the evidence work changes a real design decision and complements qualified product assessment. No current package approval, testing service or luxury-house collaboration is implied.
