The water record needs the material state.
A gravimetric-data specification for separating uptake, retained water, conditioning history and film-state changes in material comparisons.
Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.
Which water movement matters
Decide whether uptake, retention or release informs the application before selecting water-handling records or comparing their numerical percentages.
A material may absorb water from a humid environment, retain water during drying or release water after a condition change. These are different experiments. The proposed record names the process, specimen state and reference mass before constructing a curve or percentage. A coating buyer may care about a deposited film, while a formulation team may need behaviour in a mixed preparation. The source can guide either question only when the bridge is stated. A generic water-handling headline should not hide the difference between the laboratory quantity and the application behaviour that a future study would have to establish.

Explanatory geometry · no simulated or measured performance
The dry-mass denominator must be explicit
Define the dry reference and conditioning state before using gravimetric uptake to describe a deposited specimen’s response to humidity.
A gravimetric uptake quantity can be defined relative to a justified dry mass, retaining the initial state and measurement conditions. The denominator should not silently become wet preparation mass or total formulation mass. Borrmann et al. (2022) provide a deposited-film sorption example in which material state and interpretation matter. The proposed schema would preserve film preparation, thickness, humidity step, temperature and time alongside each mass observation. Where a dry-state reference is uncertain or operationally defined, the record would state that definition and its limitation rather than treating the reference as an exact universal property of the polymer.
Water-associated mass increase relative to a stated dry reference.
- Mass increase per dry-reference masskg kg⁻¹
- Measured specimen mass at time tkg
- Defined dry-reference masskg
- Time after stated condition changes
Model conditions. Positive justified dry mass Mass increase attribution requires appropriate control for other changes Reference-state and environmental protocol retained
Retention has another reference state
Keep starting-water retention attached to its reference mass and unresolved environmental wording, preserving the limits of the existing source example.
The Sun et al. (2015) crude-EPS endpoint is expressed relative to starting water, not the dry-film uptake denominator. Its retained-condition wording also remains unresolved between the Results/Figure 3c description and the method text. The proposed record would retain that discrepancy and avoid reconstructing a time series from one reported value. A partner interested in a deposited coating could use the result to formulate a hypothesis, then specify a common gravimetric protocol for its actual specimen. The existing percentage is external preparation evidence; it is not a skin-hydration measurement or a demonstrated water-release-control result for Bio.
Keep the conditions attached to the result.

A state change can alter the interpretation
Follow water-dependent material state when assessing transport assumptions, recognising where relaxation or a transition may alter the measured response.
A polymer film can change state as water content changes, affecting the relationship between uptake and a simple transport model. Borrmann et al. (2022) discuss sorption and relaxation-sensitive interpretation in their specific PVP systems. The proposed collection would therefore retain signs of state change and distinguish a fitted apparent coefficient from a transferable material constant. It would not use a coefficient from another polymer to populate an EPS film simulation as though measured. The buyer could inspect which model assumptions are plausible for the intended layer and choose a test that separates uptake, relaxation and geometry effects.
Change the conditions · examine the reference
How long does the layer need?
Change the thickness and observation time. Follow uptake through a supported film before choosing a conditioning experiment.
The data, equations and controls remain available below if 3D cannot load.
Defined model · illustrative conditions
Move a control to compare the selected condition with the defined reference curve.
Choose the thickness, reservoir condition and conditioning window that a real comparison must control.
The defined comparison
Illustrative initially analyte-free supported film, one exposed face held at constant concentration and an impermeable backing. D = 10⁻¹² m² s⁻¹ is fixed, with constant thickness, no reaction or binding and an infinite external reservoir. The 3D slices show the calculated normalised concentration across depth; the graph shows integrated uptake. Uptake is not dimensional swelling, a measured hydration rate or skin transport. The diffusion timescale is not an observed equilibration time.
Inspect the calculated values
Calculation grid, not measured observations. Inputs and assumptions are stated above.

Geometry and environment need their own records
Retain thickness, exposure and environmental control with each film observation so that geometry differences remain visible in a proposed comparison.
Film thickness, exposed area, substrate and environmental control may all affect a water-handling comparison. The proposed specimen record would attach those quantities and their methods rather than reducing the experiment to a single humidity label. A step change also needs an operational time origin and a record of whether the target condition was reached and maintained. If the source lacks those details, the collection can still contain useful qualitative evidence but should not claim exact reproduction. An application team can use the missing-field map to decide which controls and geometry measurements deserve priority before modelling a release or uptake trajectory.
Propagate the reference uncertainty
Trace dry-reference uncertainty through the uptake calculation, particularly where one mass estimate influences an entire sequence of normalised observations.
A small uncertainty in dry mass can influence every point in a normalised uptake curve. Those points may therefore share an input uncertainty rather than having independent errors. JCGM’s measurement framework includes such dependencies in a defined model (JCGM, 2008). The proposed export would retain the reference identifier, uncertainty basis and any covariance assumptions. It would also distinguish instrument readings, source summaries and fitted curves. This gives a scientist a more realistic basis for comparing preparations and prevents a densely sampled time series from appearing more independently precise than its common denominator and environmental controls justify.
A state-aware film comparison
Build a film comparison around a specified water process and benchmark, keeping state history and application transfer as explicit scientific questions.
The proposed deliverable would define a water process, specimen state, reference mass and common benchmark protocol. It would map source observations to that specification and identify which preparation or condition bridge remains untested. A coating or formulation partner could use it to decide whether a gravimetric study, a thickness comparison or an additional state measurement is the next useful commitment. Any new testing would require authenticated material, agreed access and a practical scope. The commercial proposition is a qualified comparison that can inform development, not a ready water-release technology or a validated consumer claim.
The next proposed comparison.
A state-aware gravimetric record and a common-comparator test question
Test the transition the application will encounter
Measure the condition transition the material would encounter in use, selecting the water quantity capable of changing the development decision.
The next study should reproduce a relevant condition change and measure the quantity that would alter the buyer’s plan. If the application needs release from a film, a bulk-retention endpoint may be the wrong experiment. If an apparent transport change follows swelling, geometry and state may need attention before increasing model complexity. The proposed record would identify that discriminating comparison and its stop criterion. It would retain negative or inconsistent behaviour as useful evidence. A team should leave knowing why the water experiment deserves support and what result would justify a narrower or broader material proposition.
