Keeping the experiment inside the resample.
A sensitivity plan for testing whether an analytical conclusion depends on a few units, a source selection or a modelling choice.
Proposed evidence-engineering direction | External sources and defined methods; scope, rights and delivery capacity to be agreed.
Robustness has to match the question
Define the uncertainty question that a sensitivity exercise should answer before choosing removals, resampling units or alternative fitting objectives.
A conclusion may change when one specimen is removed, a model objective changes or a condition group is excluded. Those changes are useful information, but a robustness exercise needs a defined job. The proposed plan starts with the decision and identifies the choices or units most likely to change it. It distinguishes numerical sensitivity from sampling uncertainty and avoids describing every repeated calculation as validation. A buyer could use the result to decide whether the next experiment should broaden specimen coverage, refine measurement conditions or resolve a particular source ambiguity before more sophisticated modelling is justified.

Rows may need to travel together
Preserve dependent records together during resampling so that computational repetitions do not invent an experimental design the source lacks.
Fehlberg et al. (2025) provide repeated measurements across liquids within participants. A proposed participant-level resample would carry that participant’s linked observations together, preserving the experimental unit instead of treating every median as independent. Bland and Altman (1994) explain the dependence problem underlying that choice. With only a small set of observed participants, a resampled interval also remains conditional on limited coverage and cannot certify a general consumer effect. The analysis should record the resampled unit, selection rule and target statistic, making clear that no new participants or experiments were created by computation.
Draw unit indices with replacement and retain each selected unit’s linked observations.

A leave-one-unit view has a narrower meaning
Use leave-one-unit analysis to identify influential batches or participants while retaining its narrower descriptive meaning and unresolved transfer question.
Removing one unit at a time can reveal whether a fitted conclusion relies heavily on a particular participant or batch. It does not provide a new external validation sample and should not be used to select whichever subset gives the most attractive effect. The proposed report would present the full-scope result and the sensitivity views together, with the omitted unit explicitly identified. The buyer could then decide whether the conclusion is sufficiently stable for its next development commitment or whether the missing coverage needs an independent study. A sensitive result may still be valuable when its dependence is understood and addressed.
Keep the conditions attached to the result.
Make scientific records useful through source-linked comparisons, explicit units and a reproducible decision trail.
Model objectives can move the answer
Compare fitting objectives explicitly, revealing how response transformations change the influence of small and large errors on the result.
Fitting on an original response scale and fitting after a logarithmic transformation give different weights to errors. A resampling exercise should not conceal that choice. NIST’s model-assessment guidance emphasises residual behaviour and the limitations of relying on R² alone (NIST/SEMATECH, n.d.). The proposed analysis would retain the objective, parameter bounds and observed domain for each alternative. If an apparent model advantage depends on a convenient transformation, the report would expose that dependence. A formulation scientist can then decide whether the relevant application values relative error, absolute error or another explicitly justified loss function.

Defined model · illustrative conditions
Points are discrete design calculations, joined for comparison. No experimental observations or confidence intervals are shown.
Fund the preparation or repeat that addresses the uncertainty relevant to the development decision.
The defined comparison
Balanced random-intercept scenario with between-preparation SD 10 response AU and within-preparation SD 6 response AU. Preparations are independent; residual readings are independent with common variance. The naive estimate treats all BR readings as independent and ignores clustering. The 3D groups depict a design count, not measured sample values. No confidence interval, power or precision guarantee is calculated. Drift, pairing, operators, serial correlation and unequal group sizes need additional structure.
Inspect the calculated values
Calculation grid, not measured observations. Inputs and assumptions are stated above.

Source selection is another sensitivity dimension
Record scientific and rights exclusions when assessing sensitivity to source selection, rather than silently changing the evidence behind a conclusion.
A public evidence collection may exclude records because of missing units, incompatible endpoints or source rights. Those exclusions can influence the scientific picture. The proposed sensitivity log would distinguish an unavailable record from an incompatible one, and a legal reuse limit from a scientific limitation. Cochrane’s synthesis guidance treats sensitivity to analytical decisions as part of a careful review (Deeks et al., 2024). The application here is a material or assay comparison, not a completed intervention review. The report would preserve the eligible source set and explain which selection decisions could reasonably change the proposed experiment or commercial interpretation.
Avoid false precision from many repetitions
Show the experimental information behind a smooth resampling interval so that computational repetition cannot substitute for additional independent observations.
Thousands of computational repetitions can make a plotted interval look smooth without solving a sparse experimental design. The number of bootstrap draws controls numerical approximation, while independent unit coverage remains a property of the source data. The proposed report would state both counts and avoid implying that the computational count is a sample size. It would also distinguish variation in a resampled estimate from uncertainty in calibration or unreported conditions. If the source lacks the necessary unit identifiers, the appropriate output may be a qualitative sensitivity map rather than a numerical interval with assumptions the buyer cannot inspect.
A useful robustness brief
Build a robustness brief around the target statistic, dependence structure and alternative assumptions most relevant to the receiving decision.
The proposed deliverable would identify the target statistic, experimental unit, alternative fit objectives and pre-specified sensitivity questions. It would show which decision changes under each defensible alternative, rather than presenting a gallery of nearly identical curves. A partner considering a study or model licence could inspect whether the conclusion remains useful under realistic analytical choices. This could support a scoped analytical brief, with dataset rights and delivery capacity agreed before work. It would not promise statistical significance, confidence coverage or predictive performance that the available source design cannot establish.
The next proposed comparison.
A resampling specification and decision-sensitive comparison report
What to measure next
Let sensitivity findings identify the next useful observation, whether it concerns an influential preparation, missing condition or competing mechanism.
A sensitivity result should lead to a practical question. If one unit dominates, independent units may be worth collecting. If the answer changes with the observed-domain boundary, a targeted measurement outside the current range may be needed. If source uncertainty dominates, recovering the original method may be the cheapest next step. The proposed plan would connect each sensitivity to that concrete action and state a stop condition. A buyer should leave knowing which additional evidence could reduce the important ambiguity, rather than assuming that more computation can rescue every sparse or mismatched dataset.
