A match in one room. A mismatch in another.

Does a finish remain acceptably matched under the illuminations that matter to its application?

Proposed optical-materials research direction | Study design, resources and permissions would be agreed before work.

A colour match needs a setting.

An acceptable match must name the relevant illumination.

A formulation or package can match its reference in a development room and appear different in a retail setting. That can become a commercial problem even when the original measurement was repeatable. Our proposed illumination work would ask whether the match survives the lights relevant to the buyer’s use. It would begin with measured or appropriately specified illumination, rather than a screen filter chosen for drama. The decision might be to change the pigment system, narrow a presentation condition or investigate an alternative finish. The output should explain which change is justified, not simply announce that appearance depends on light.

Explanatory geometry · no simulated or measured performance

Separate spectral similarity from one matched appearance.

Spectral similarity and one matched appearance are different requirements.

Two specimens can have a similar colour descriptor under one condition while retaining different spectra. We would preserve those spectra so that another illumination can be considered without pretending the original match was universal. The surface geometry also belongs to the comparison, especially where a finish is directional. A claim of matching appearance should identify the reference condition and the judgement being made. If the buyer’s concern is a changing observer as well as a changing lamp, that becomes a separate question. The proposed brief would not merge all sources of perceptual variation into a vague label of colour instability.

Using the CIE distinctions explicitly.

Observer and illuminant metamerism need distinct interpretations.

The inspected CIE report records distinguish colorimetric context and metamerism associated with illuminant or observer changes (CIE, 2018; CIE, 1989). The official standard-system definition gives the reference-observer boundary (CIE, n.d.). We would use those descriptions without claiming to have acquired the full paid reports or their purchaser datasets. The proposed assessment would specify which data and calculation method are needed before implementation. No colour difference tolerance would be invented from a publication summary. The source records support a precise question: whether the alternatives remain matched for the declared conditions and how that conclusion should be qualified.

Making the illuminant a visible input.

A simulated display colour remains an illustration of declared inputs.

The illustrated tristimulus relation shows that a colour coordinate depends on illumination and spectral reflectance as well as the selected observer functions. A calculated display colour would be labelled as an illustration, with screen and viewing limitations retained. For an ordinary non-fluorescent specimen, a reflectance-based model can support a comparison when its inputs are qualified. A fluorescent finish or a strongly directional sample may need a different measurement description. We would not silently reuse one spectrum outside its collection boundary. The buyer should see which inputs have been measured and which remain assumptions before the visualisation influences a design choice.

Lights from the customer journey.

Choose the lamps from the application journey.

A meaningful first design might include the development reference, a relevant retail illumination and a setting encountered after purchase. Those conditions should come from the application rather than arbitrary names such as warm and cool. A source’s spectral distribution matters more than a casual lamp description. Where actual sources cannot be measured initially, the brief should state the proxy and its limitation. The proposed comparison would prioritise the smallest set of conditions that could change the buyer’s material selection, while retaining enough context to explain why a match succeeds in one condition and fails in another.

(CIE, 2018) | (CIE, 1989) | (CIE, n.d.)

Do not let a display become the evidence.

A screen cannot replace the complete appearance of a specimen.

An interactive lamp change is useful for explaining the question, but a browser image cannot reproduce every specimen’s appearance for every viewer. We would keep simulated views distinct from measured spectra and any separately designed visual assessment. Automatic white balance and camera processing can conceal or exaggerate a difference, so recorded comparisons require controlled capture. If a luxury team needs a perceptual decision, appropriate specimens and viewing conditions should be considered. The proposed first brief would identify what evidence is required, rather than use a persuasive on-screen transformation as a substitute for testing the actual material.

Return a condition-qualified match decision.

Report which conditions preserve the buyer’s chosen match.

The proposed output would identify which illuminations preserve or disrupt the chosen match, the spectral contributors to that difference and the limitations of the model or assessment. It could recommend a narrower specification, a different comparison or a new formulation direction. A public explanation could show the illumination logic while protecting confidential pigment or preparation details through an agreed route. No existing Bio optical finish, luxury partnership or universal colour match is asserted. Commercial usefulness comes from connecting the comparison to a presentation or formulation decision that a partner can act on, with the source and viewing boundaries still visible.

The mismatch that costs a decision.

The mismatch should lead to a lighting, formulation or measurement decision.

A partner can bring the reference, candidate, relevant locations and the moment when the match matters. We could assess available spectra and illumination records before proposing a scoped study. Suitable data rights, method access, expertise and deliverables would need agreement. The first milestone is a defensible answer about the match under named conditions, rather than a generic claim of colour consistency. That can support a qualified material choice or a focused science-and-design collaboration, while avoiding the expense of reformulating a finish whose apparent problem was introduced by uncontrolled lighting or a photographic workflow.
